National Cribs Competition – Christmas 2019



As in previous years, Festivals Malta is launching the National Cribs Competitions for Christmas 2019, which will be spread over six different categories. The categories are divided according to the cribs’ size, whether they are mechanical, the originality of the materials used, as well as the concept itself. In each category monetary prizes will be awarded to the best three winners, who will be chosen by members of the jury.

This year the competition will feature these categories:


1. Mechanical Crib

2. Large Crib Biblical Style

3. Large Crib Other Style

4. Medium-Sized Crib

5. Small Crib

6. Original Crib


In order for the cribs to qualify for the competition, every crib must be open for public viewing from Friday 13 December 2019 to Sunday 5 January 2020. Exhibition opening hours should be from 5pm to 8pm throughout all the abovementioned days. Every applicant may keep the exhibition space open for longer hours and/or days than is stipulated. The entrance to the crib exhibition should be free, but it is permissible to place a receptacle close to the crib for donations from the public.


All members of the jury have the right to visit the cribs as many times as they wish in the days and times listed for exhibition. They may also take photographs and/or videos of the crib or parts of it, by themselves or with the help of a hired photographer. The jury has the right to withold prizes if, according to its judgement, the required level has not been reached. In every case its decision is final and not appealable.


The applications will be available from Monday 14 October 2019 and should be sent by post to or submitted by hand at the Festivals Malta offices, 13, Europa Centre, John Lopez Street, Floriana, filled in clearly with all details written down, together with a fee of €10, not later than noon of Friday, 15 November 2019. General Regulations for Cribs Competition

1. Festivals Malta is launching these Cribs Competitions for Christmas 2019:


  1. Competition Number 1 - Mechanical Crib

  2. Competition Number 2 - Large Crib Biblical Style

  3. Competition Number 3 - Large Crib Other Style

  4. Competition Number 4 - Medium-sized Crib

  5. Competition Number 5 - Small Crib

  6. Competition Number 6 - Original Crib

2. In these competitions thyme and/or plants and/or any other form of material prohibited by law should never be used. Anyone who does not follow this regulation will be disqualified from the relative competition.


3. Anyone who takes part in one of these competitions should indicate on the application form, the location where the crib will be assembled together with a map or directions.


4. Every crib must be open for public viewing from Friday 13 December 2019 to Sunday 5 January 2020. Exhibition opening hours should be from 5pm to 8pm throughout all the above mentioned days. Every applicant may keep the place of exhibition open for longer hours and/or days than is stipulated.


5. On the location where there is a crib taking part in one of these competitions, a banner, poster or other means must be hung up where there is the exhibition, with the words: PRESEPJU / CRIB, so as to indicate the place of exhibition. A few points will be deducted wherever these signs are not as prominent as they should be. Every necessary permit from the responsible authorities for the hanging up/placing of these signs is the responsibility of the applicant.


6. The entrance to the crib exhibition should be free, but it is permissible to place a receptacle close to the crib to hold donations from the public.


7. The cribs registered for these competitions, that are in some way or other also taking part in an exhibition or as part of a crib collection in any locality, should be placed prominently where they are being exhibited. These cribs should also be marked with a sign with the words: NATIONAL CRIBS COMPETITIONS and should also have a clear indication of the name of the participant and the category of the competition in which the applicant is taking part.


8. The jury has the right to withold prizes if according to its judgement, the required level has not been reached. In every case its decision is final and not appealable.


9. All members of the jury have the right to visit the cribs as many times as they wish in the days and times listed for exhibition. They may also take photographs and/or videos of the crib or parts of it, by themselves or with the help of a hired photographer.


10. Every applicant should submit the exact measurements of the crib being submitted to the competition, as stipulated in the application form.


11. Every applicant must submit a photo/photos of the crib by not later than 2nd December 2019 till noon either by post or by hand to the below address:

The photos can be sent via email on martina.a.bonello@festivalsmalta.org. The application for the competition isn’t considered valid if the photo/photos are not received until the date and time indicated above.


12. With the application, the applicant is giving his permission that his name, the address of the location where the exhibition is being done, and the telephone number can be published for the interest of the general public on the website of Festivals Malta as well as in a leaflet published for this purpose.


13. If an applicant registers the crib in a competition but the jury considers that it does not follow the regulations, it may consider disqualification.


14. The applications on the prescribed form, filled in clearly with all details written down, ara available as from Monday 14th October 2019 and should be handed to the Festivals Malta, 13, Europa Centre, John Lopez Street, Floriana FRN1400, together with a fee of €10, not later than noon of Friday, 15th November 2019. No application will be accepted if received after the stipulated time of the abovementioned date.
